Why do we spend so much time sitting around before the actual selection process starts?

This time is used by the judge and the attorneys on unexpected events that must be communicated outside the presence of the jury. This may seem like time wasted, but it is important to the judge and the parties to be able to resolve these issues before the jurors report to the courtroom.
