Public Notice - Reappointment of Incumbent Full-Time Magistrate Judge Elizabeth M. Timothy

The current term of the office for United States Magistrate Judge Elizabeth M. Timothy in Pensacola, Florida is due to expire on June 9, 2020.  The United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida is required by law to establish a panel of citizens to consider the reappointment of the magistrate judge to a new eight-year term.
The duties for the position are demanding, wide-ranging and include: 1) pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from judges of the district court; 2) discovery and settlement matters in civil cases; 3) pretrial motions, trial, and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants; 4) civil rights cases filed by prisoners, non-prisoner pro se civil cases and social security cases; 5) preliminary proceedings in criminal cases;  6) trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases (CVB); 7) other duties such as handling criminal complaints and arrest warrants, search warrants, initial appearances, and grand jury matters; and  8) naturalization ceremonies.  The basic jurisdiction of the United States magistrate judge is specified in 28 U.S.C § 636.
