Hurricane Michael - Courthouse Closures

The U.S. District Court in Panama City will be closed until further notice. 

Per Administrative Order, amended October 30th, 2018, all trials, hearings, and other matters requiring a personal appearance before the Court in Panama City Division cases will be handled in the division where the assigned district judge resides.  

In felony criminal cases, all initial appearances and related matters, including detention hearings, for Panama City Division criminal defendants shall be held in Tallahassee, Florida, except when such defendants are arrested in Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties. Defendants arrested in those counties shall be transported to Pensacola, Florida for such proceedings.

Parties may continue to file cases and post to Panama City in CM/ECF, but proceedings will be in the division of the assigned district judge.

Until further notice, all phone calls and mail delivery for the Panama City Division of the District Court will be forwarded to the Pensacola Division. Should you need to contact another division of the court directly, please use the information below.

Press Release - Magistrate Judge Hope T. Cannon

The Judges of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida are pleased to announce that Hope T. Cannon has been selected to join our district as a fulltime magistrate judge in the Pensacola Division of the Court. Ms. Cannon will begin her service with our Court on March 4, 2019.

Ms. Cannon earned her Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, from the University of South Alabama, and her Juris Doctorate, magna cum laude, from the University of Alabama. Since earning her Juris Doctorate, Ms. Cannon has gained significant experience litigating a wide variety of cases in multiple jurisdictions across the United States, most recently as a partner for Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP.

The Judges and staff of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida offer Ms. Cannon our warmest congratulations and look forward to serving with her for many years to come.

Reappointment of Federal Public Defender in the Northern District of Alabama

The current four-year term of Kevin L. Butler, Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Alabama at Birmingham, expires 16 October 2019. The Federal Public Defender, under authority of 18 U.S.C. § 3006A(g)(2)(A), provides criminal defense services to individuals unable to afford counsel and supervises a full-time staff of attorneys and administrative and clerical personnel.

This is a notice of an opportunity to provide pro bono representation in Mann v. Calderon, et al., Case No. 1:17-cv-241-MW-GRJ.
Plaintiff, an inmate in the Florida Department of Corrections, currently incarcerated at Tomoka Correctional Institution, seeks relief under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 in connection with alleged deliberate indifference to Plaintiff’s serious medical needs. A Clerk’s default has been entered with respect to two defendants, and the Court is prepared to set an evidentiary hearing with respect to Plaintiff’s damages claim.

Revision of the Local Rules of the Northern District of Florida

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida has revised its Local Rules. The revised rules are now in effect. The revised rules include significant changes from the prior rules. And the revised rules include changes from the draft that was circulated for public comment in May 2015.
